Ilex (Ilex aquifolium, I. crenata)
€9,00
Ilex is an evergreen shrub with leathery, dark green leaves and often striking red fruits that last all winter. Particularly popular for decorative purposes, it is used in garden landscaping and interiors, giving a lively and festive atmosphere.
Description
Ilex aquifolium and Ilex crenata are two species of the genus Ilex, known for their beautiful and characteristic leaves. Ilex aquifolium or "bearberry" is the most common species, with dark green, leathery and spiny leaves, and produces small, red fruits during the winter season, ideal for ornamental use. Ilex crenata, on the other hand, has smaller, smooth and more rounded leaves, without spines, giving it a more noble appearance and usually formed into spherical or bonsai shapes.
Care
It needs a bright or semi-shaded environment, with protection from strong sun in summer. They prefer moderate temperatures but can also tolerate frost. Suitable soil for Ilex is rich in organic matter, and should ensure good drainage.
Watering
Water regularly, especially when the soil is dry. In summer, water about twice a week and reduce watering in winter as the plants are dormant.
Temperature
It can withstand low temperatures up to a point, but must be protected in extreme frost conditions. In the summer months, place the plants in a semi-shaded spot away from bright sun.
Transplanting
It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil. If planted in a pot or a pot holder, ensure good drainage and soil rich in organic matter so that they can grow properly and maintain their healthy appearance.
Tips
To maintain the shape and appearance of Ilex crenata, we can prune it regularly. Ilex aquifolium can be used in Christmas decorations because of its red fruits that remain on the plant for months, adding festive colour to the garden or interior.
